Elyar E. Gasanov

Doctor of science in physics and mathematics, head of the Department of Mathematical Theory of Intelligent Systems, head of the Theoretical Cybernetic Problems Laboratory. Head of the Master’s program "Intelligent Systems. Theory and applications". Chairman of the jury of the Universiade "Lomonosov" section "Mathematics and Computer Science" in 2023.

  • М.:
The Universiade section thematics are related to corresponding Master's programs. Please tell us in a few words about the Master's "Intelligent systems". What were the reasons to create this Master's?
    Elyar:
Academician Valerii B. Kudryavtsev founded the Department of Mathematical Theory of Intelligent Systems (MaTIS in Russian — ed.) in 1991. Back then, this branch of science was not as popular as nowadays, although Valerii Borisovich predicted the prospect of artificial intelligence study.
The Master’s "Intelligent systems. Theory and Applications" is aimed at training specialists in the field of artificial intelligence, which is now widespread both in science itself and in applications.
  • М.:
What are the competitive advantages of this Master’s?
    Elyar:
The research, which is being hold in the MaTIS department, lies both in fundamental science and applied engineering. Most of the scientific members of the Department are also doing some engineering research for Russian and worldwide companies, such as Huawei, Kraftway, Yadro, STC, etc.

The students of this Master’s will have a chance to find themselves in such branches of science, as discrete mathematics, intelligent systems theory, automata theory, neural networks theory, theory of control systems, theory of databases, theory of discrete functions, information security, program verification and (or) engage in the development of ultra-large-scale integrated circuits, neural networks, machine learning, pattern recognition, development of mathematical problem solvers, and so on.
  • М.:
What makes the students in this program special?
    Elyar:
The students themselves do not differ from other Master’s programs students. The difference is in the topics of student’s research work; also the difference lies in the opportunity for the most of highly-achieving students to join the ongoing research work under cooperation agreements with real industrial customers.
  • М.:
What would be the most desired combination of hard and soft skills for the students enrolled in this Master’s program?
    Elyar:
We would prefer the Master’s program students to be familiar with the basics of discrete mathematics for research purposes; and to possess solid programming skills for engineering. As per soft skills, I would wish the students to have a hard-working nature and be able to keep a positive mood.
  • М.:
What were the reasons to choose the listed topics for the final stage of the Universiade?
    Elyar:
The final stage topics were chosen to coincide with the topics of research of the MaTIS department scientists. That experience may be especially useful for the master’s students, who admit the Master’s right after the Universiade, because it may make easier the choice of a scientific advisor for the Master’s degree.
  • М.:
What are the scientific prospects of this Master’s graduates?
    Elyar:
In fact, Master's graduates should preferably enter the postgraduate study program to realize their scientific prospects. Our Department provides postgraduate study programs on the following specialities:
    • 1.1.5. “Mathematical logic, algebra, number theory and discrete mathematics”,
    • 1.2.1 “Artificial intelligence and machine learning”,
    • 1.2.3 “Theoretical computer science, cybernetics”,
    • 2.3.6 “Methods and information security systems, information security.”
It is important to bear in mind that the postgraduate study and defense of a candidate of science degree thesis becomes a crucially new professional level in comparison with the Master's study and Master's thesis defense. That's a challenge; however, highly-achieving Master's students may complete this challenge. As per industry, the graduates are highly ranked in IT employment.
  • М.:
    And what about financial prospects?
    Elyar:
Commonly, our graduates accept their after-diploma offer of an IT company with compensation about 150 000 Russian roubles. As well as our graduates possess strong engineering skills, they are able to grow up in salary quite quickly. It was also noted that the candidate of science degree completion allows growing up in salary up to two times.
  • М.:
Could you, please, leave some parting wishes for the Universiade-2024 participants.
    Elyar:
I wish the Universiade-2024 participants successfull admission to our Master’s, study well, graduate from the Master’s with honors, enroll into the postgraduate program, defense the candidate of science degree, become a researcher of our department and work for one or more leading IT companies, find love and create a wonderful family, be a wealthy, confident and happy person standing firmly on his feet!
