Andrew A. Golovan

Doctor of science in physics and mathematics, Head of the Laboratory of navigation and control, Head of the "Mathematical fundamentals of navigation systems" and head of the jury of corresponding section of the Universiade "Lomonosov".

Blitz interview in advance to the Universiade'2023.

  • М.:
The Universiade section thematics are related to corresponding Master's programs. Please tell us in a few words about the Master's "Mathematical fundamentals of navigation systems". What were the reasons to create this Master's?
    Andrew:
On the one hand, I am the professor of the Deparment of applied mechanics and conrol, on the other hand — I am the head of the Laboratory of control and navigation of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics. The laboratory is proceeding the research in field of high-demand applications in field of navigation and moving objects control in tight cooperation with our industrial partners since the foundation of the Laboratory in 1987. The field of our responsibility is in mathematical models, methods and algorithms of in-complex data processing, development and implementation of the software, so, in fact, we are IT specialists in the field of navigation. Our experience of cooperation with
instrument making companies emphasized, that the engineers in abovestated area inherent the lack of knowledges and skills, which are common for the researchers of the Laboratory and the Department. So, the content and the organization of this Master’s was obvious for us: we distinctly know, what and how we have to teach.
  • М.:
What are the competitive advantages of this Master’s?
    Andrew:
Our Master’s has a direct purpose: it is aimed on preparation of IT specialists in the field of navigation and its applications. In fact, we do not know any education program, which is comparably focused. As well as our group is well-known in Russia and abroad, the graduate Diploma is highly-rated, and the graduates do not face with any difficulties with further employment.
  • М.:
What makes the students in this program special?
    Andrew:
The students have the possibility to study and solve problems, which are tightly connected with real navigational applications and experimental data processing, as their course papers and M. Sci. theses.
  • М.:
What would be the most desired combination of hard and soft skills for the students enrolled in this Master’s program?
    Andrew:
I expect them to be initiative, self-sufficient (for example, in studying any software), sufficient knowldege of English, intuition, patience, perseverance etc.
  • М.:
What are the scientific prospects of this Master’s graduates?
    Andrew:
It depends on the student. Surely, it is possible to continue education via the postgraduate programs.
  • М.:
    And what about financial prospects?
    Andrew:
We normally invitate our high-rated students to take part in the current research of the Laboratory, it is surelly well-paid.
  • М.:
Could you, please, leave some parting wishes for the Universiade-2024 participants.
    Andrew:
Good luck, let the participation be helpful to choose the further life path.
